The President's Soap Box

Tennis is the most-played sport anywhere in the world but is also one of the least
watched sport and gets little TV coverage unless you have FOX TV. It's not like soccer.
Having said that, tennis is one of my passions, after all, I am Steffi Graf's biggest fan.

The Terry Stocker Memorial Tennis Tournament held on 26 March 2006 showed
how tennis is so popular, even in a small social club like the Long Yang Club
Canberra. Tennis alone provides an all-round fitness routine. Running left
to right- back to front or what I called crabbing formation, chasing those
dropshots and hitting well-placed smashes will keep you fit forever. Tennis
players are gifted with tight glutes. I'm sure I got one. Lean-mean physique
and beautiful legs most often hidden by those baggy shorts, hey,
that's where surprises are hidden. Of course, you can dress like Daniela
Hantuchova or the overly famous Anna Kournikova.

Often, line calls are an issue in tennis. If there is a dispute, simply play the point
again. If this becomes ongoing, you have the option of calling for an umpire.
Boys, observe sportsmanship. It's competitive but fun at the same time.

All participants of last week's tournament had a marvellous time including the
spectators. Congratulations again to the eventual winner Mel and runner-up Paul,
and to the Doubles - Mel and Peter, and runners up Tony and Noel. What about
the gourmet lunch? It's a feast. I can't wait for the next one.

Thank you to all the donors of trophies and to the tournament director Keith Millar
for yet another successful event. I want to see everyone in the next tournament.

Tennis you've got to love it.

Secretary's Corner

I hope all our tennis players have recovered after their long day of tennis. Thank you to Keith and all his helpers for organising the Terry Stocker Memorial Tennis Tournament. Your Club relies on people opening up their houses and organising other events, such as the Tennis Tournament.

If you would like to volunteer for such an event please contact Leo your friendly events coordinator (via me - email here). While we are on the topic of helping out, I would like to thank Yin, Cesar and Keith for their help with IT related matters, and for Keith’s ongoing commitment to the website. Also I would like to thank Barrie, Yin and especially Cesar for their assistance while I slowly recover from my ankle reconstruction. It has been a trying time, and your assistance is highly valued.

Internationally, we received advice that Richard St. Laurent had resigned from his position of board member, Long Yang Club International Executive Committee. Thank you Richard for your service to Long Yang and best of luck for your new endeavours.  This has resulted in a call for nominations for the vacant position and given notice of a subsequent election.

That’s all Folks

Tennis tournament report

The second Terry Stocker Memorial Tennis Tournament was held at the Old Parliament House Tennis Courts on 26 March with 12 players in the Singles, and 14 in the Doubles.  Unfortunately, the Tournament Director (don't you love that title!) was a late scratching as he does not know how to handle a knife in the kitchen.  Reports are that his partner (guess who) will be doing all the cooking from now on.

Below are the formal results:

SINGLES

Court 1 Winner - Peter J. Court 3 Winner - Mel T.
Court 2 Winner - Paul Y. Court 4 Winner - Cesar G.

Finals:

First Semi Final Paul Y. defeated Peter J.
Second Semi Final Mel T. defeated Cesar G.
Final Mel T. defeated Paul Y.

DOUBLES

Court 1 Winners - Peter J. and Mel T. Court 2 Winners - Tony E. and Noel M.
Final: Peter and Mel defeated Tony and Noel

A couple of wonderful things happened on the day.  Firstly, Terry Stocker's sister, Fran, arrived for lunch, and the Singles winners were privileged to have their trophies presented by Fran.  Thank you so much, Fran, I hope you return next year.

And LYCC presented the framed certificate for Terry's rose, which is climbing the fence at the tennis courts, to Cesar as a memento.

It was a wonderful day, with visitors from Sydney as well as our locals.  We missed our Singapore contingent - let's hope they arrive next year.  A lovely pot luck picnic lunch kept everyone full, but the players had a hard time, as there were lots of games to be played on the day.

From a cost point of view, the total cost to the Club, after members fees and donations, etc., were taken into account, was $124.40.  If you deduct the $100 in membership fees we generated on the day, the actual cost was only $24.40.  Not bad for such a great day.

I hope we can get a new Tournament Director and organiser for next year.  If you are interested, please email the Secretary at canberra@longyangclub.org.

See you all next year!

Keith
Tournament Director
