Presidential Greetings.......
I reported last
time that after the very successful cocktail party at Mark and Miguel's
a group of us went to Cube to "party on". It was some time into the
evening when I noticed him - a man that seemed out of place in the
environment. He was probably in his late 40s or early 50s, with lank,
greasy hair and an outfit that would not exactly be considered in
fashion. It was, however, his actions that made much more of an
impression to me. On numerous occasions he would stand next to a young
male patron, and would then proceed fondle the hapless victim. How he
did not end up with a fat lip was a mystery to me.
Now, what is the point of this story? No, it's not because I am slighted
by the fact that I did not receive any of his unwanted advances. It just
made me think of how this sort of thing is considered to be just one of
those things one puts up with in the "gay scene". It also made me
thankful that at Long Yang, this is something that we don't to have put
up with. I believe that because of all the members' efforts, our
gatherings have become safe places for us to be ourselves, free from the
pretensions and unacceptable behaviour that are present in outside
social events. The LYCC continues to be a haven because we, the members,
respect each other and accept each other as equals.
If this sounds like a pat on the back for LYCC, then, dammit! it's true
because we all deserve this! So I encourage everyone to continue to
attend our jam-packed calendar of events, starting with our Christmas in
July function at Woden, which promises to be an event sure to chase
those winter blues away.
Cheers,
Anthony

June Function - Olympic Champagne Brunch
A chilly day, but still 30 intrepid souls journeyed to Jeremy's and Simon's farm for a fun filled brunch, games and fellowship. Thanks to all those who helped prepare brunch (I won't list you all in case I miss someone, but you know who you are, and know that we appreciate your work), and a special thanks to Mark and Miguel for donating the makings.
The torch relay was amazing, with the slow motion sprinting especially captivating! And we all appreciated the Olympic Flame, even though one contestant tried to put it out with a handbag.
The competition
was furious, with four intrepid judges allocated the task of
(impartially? perhaps not always!) deciding the deserving winners.
Another handbag nearly knocked one of them out - was that to do with the
impartiality??? Thanks to those judges:
Prez. Anthony,
Noel, David and Keith.
Click Here for the results. And a big thanks to Simon for his organisation - torch relay, Flame, medals and presentations, and of course, the Olympic music. And to Jeremy and Simon for their hospitality.

From John P: Robin Higgs, a regular guest of Long Yang Canberra, has just been awarded an OAM [Order of Merit] in the Queens Birthday Honors, you will remember Robin, he has given piano recitals at Jeremy and Simon's and John P's place playing popular piano classical favorites. He received this award, the only music award this year, for concert pianist, teacher, concert organiser, broadcaster and recording artist. If anyone is interested in his CD's, they are available from John Priddle 02 62595229, or mobile 0419481388. Robin says "they are mostly well known classical piano pieces by Chopin, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Grieg, Schumann, Grieg, Granados, Satie, Tchaikowsky etc." Congratulations Robin!
Also from John P: Another guest of Long Yang also from Adelaide is Raymond Haynes, Hair Stylist, who was awarded in 2004 MAN of THE YEAR in the Australia Day Honors, He received that for his compassion for his fellow man, and his consideration for the elderly. Well done Raymond.
From Treasurer Barrie: A computer tip: right-click on Recycle Bin & slide allocation of total drive for Recycling from 10% down to 1%; this frees up space to other activities; and no one should have much in their Bin.
