Presidential Greetings.......

The issue of immigration is certainly being hotly debated in the public arena, with DIMIA and the government very much on the back foot in the light of the Cornelia Rau and Vivian Solon cases. Amidst all the negativity this topic has generated, I was extremely heartened with the news that two of our members have been granted residency after a long and at times harrowing period of waiting. That they still chose to make Australia their home is perhaps a testament to the underlying reality that despite the constant reports of forcible deportations, children in custody and unsatisfactory conditions in detention centres, this country remains a welcome place for the most part.

Back in the late 70's, my father arrived in Sydney as a tourist, then moved to Perth where he went underground for several years and became an illegal immigrant. In 1980 the Fraser government declared an amnesty and my father was granted a permanent residency, which also allowed us as his dependents the same privilege. Had the same situation occurred in today's climate, would my father have been rounded up to enjoy the hospitality of a detention centre for a brief period before being duly deported?

I believe the government's stance will slowly start to soften, as Liberal backbenchers stridently voice their growing concern about the casualties of a hard-line immigration policy. For the time being, members of the Long Yang Club Canberra share in the delight of our two newest Australian residents, and their partners and friends.

Cheers,
Anthony

Membership and New Members

No new members this month, but the coming functions are designed to encourage participants to join.  Our target is 50 just to beat last year.  So if you haven't paid, please bring your membership fee to the next function you attend, or send a cheque made payable to Long Yang Club Canberra to our postal address.

May Function - Miguel's and Mark's Cocktail Party

There was definitely a chill in the evening air, but at the LYCC cocktail party the atmosphere was very warm. We had 40 members attending the function at Mark and Miguel's, where we were treated with an outstanding selection of finger food that was snapped up quickly. Our drinks host(ess) was kept very busy providing us with excellent cocktails including strawberry daiquiris, margaritas and even pina coladas for those who also like getting caught in the rain. (Sorry - I just had a 70's flashback).

Fortified with drink and food, the evening progressed with impromptu entertainment, which included:

Contrary to rumours, the evening did NOT generate into a bacchanalian* orgy, but the mood was definitely convivial as the party winded down. Several members decided to party on, however, and dispatched themselves to Cube nightclub to dance the rest of the night away.

There was no doubt that the evening was an unqualified success, mainly because of the tremendous efforts of our hosts Miguel and Mark. I thank them on behalf of LYCC for their generous hospitality. I do believe that everyone else contributed just by sharing themselves openly and accepting everybody in the best possible spirit of friendship. Well done to all!

And finally, a little joke to make you smile:

Corporate Lesson 4:
A crow was sitting on a tree, doing nothing all day. A rabbit asked him,
"Can I also sit like you  and do nothing all day long?" The crow answered:
"Sure, why not." So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the crow, and
rested. A fox jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

Moral of the story: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting
very high up.
