November 2006

Greetings From the President:

The year went by so quickly. It's the end of the year again, it's our summer season, holiday time, to the beach or by the pool and time to acquire the best tan possible and lots of barbecues.  In sports, it's The Ashes right now and tennis in January 07. With soaring temperatures, don't forget the bushfires and when out in the sun,
don't forget to stay under shade, wear protective clothing, wear a hat, wear wrap around sunglasses and use SPF30+ broad spectrum. Yes, I am paid to promote skin cancer prevention.................

I want to say that it's been a busy and an eventful year. You have seen the introduction of our monthly Yum Cha in August 06. We had potluck, a house warming, X-mas in July Dinner , Floriade walk and BBQ's, with visits from our Sydney Chapter friends. We also said temporary goodbyes to some members and welcomed new members. Special mention goes to Stuart P. and David C. for working as Secretaries. Your contributions were
all appreciated. Peter Holmes is now our acting Secretary, I may say, you are doing a great job. It's been a beauty all year round.

Our next major event is the AGM on 24 February 2007, please mark your calendar when the date is set. We will have our election of committee members and discuss our priorities for 2007.  Please consider your nominations....also,Why not put your own name forward....contributing is half the fun?!

Lastly, enjoy your holiday, drive safely and seeyou at our next Yum Cha.

Boys, Stay Fabulous !!!!

SpringOut

LYC Canberra had an information table at this year’s SpringOut.  We had a professionally-designed brochure to hand out.   During the day, we had a number of enquiries.  As a result, we have two new members.  Thanks to all the members who helped at the information table.

We will distribute the brochure among the university student service centres at the beginning of the 2007 academic year.

Social News

November was a great social time for LYC Canberra members: two Yum Cha and a BBQ.  Some people say that Canberra doesn’t have a regular gay social life – that’s not so if you are a LYC Canberra member.

The two Yum Cha brunches were held on 12 and 26 November.  Some of our LYC Sydney’s colleagues joined us at the second brunch.  Because our Yum Cha have become regular events, the restaurant management looks after us by ensuring that we get value-for money.  On both occasions, the cost per member was about three beers in a gay bar.  Steamed broccoli and lobster balls are favourites.

Thirty-two members and their friends attended the BBQ function.  Some of those attending were LYC Sydney members.  The club paid for the food and some members contributed salads.  Because of Wolf’s contribution, members enjoyed freshly-made Black Forest Cake – yummo!  After the BBQ, some went onto the Bush Dance while others stayed on at the function, enjoying the coolness and bird calls that come with Canberra’s summer twilight.

Many thanks to Stephen and Daniel for hosting the BBQ.  It was a wonderful location for an Asian-friendly BBQ.
