Editor's Note
Well, Members, it was a sad month with the passing of a close friend to many of us, and a very long term member of LYC Canberra - Laurie Suitor. In 1995, Laurie won a competition to name our Newsletter - Whispering Bamboo. So he will always be a part of LYC Canberra while we maintain that name.
Let us keep him in our prayers. RIP Laurie.
Enjoy. Ed
Presidential Greetings.......
While I was taking my suit to the dry cleaners the other day I was reminded of the occasions I had worn it. As I consider wearing a suit as too formal for my current workplace, I tend to wear it only on special occasions. This was when I realise that the majority of those were funerals. I'll get back to this later.
I have these two friends who I see infrequently. They have one thing in common - they both possess this compulsion to retreat within shells they have created for most of their everyday lives. Like lunar eclipses, they briefly allow glimpses of their personalities before withdrawing into their regular state. I am not saying that theirs is not a valid lifestyle choice; however, they have both indicated a desire to change, but personal issues are holding them back.
This is where my suit comes in. Every time I look at it now, it reminds me: life is short. When loved ones die, a significant part of our grief is for the happiness that is to be experienced no more. I certainly do not think that our lives can be summed up in a slogan, but events do tend to distract us, and make us miss opportunities. To paraphrase Robin Williams, we've got carpe that diem. A couple of yards of pin-striped material serves as a reminder to me.
Cheers,
Anthony

Congratulations to ALL members and those who encouraged others to join. We have now met and exceeded our target of 50 for the year!! Welcome to another 'country' member as well - Billy Wong, the LYC International Co-ordinator. Billy has long had an association with LYC Canberra, as one of the oldest chapters of the organisation, and he decided he would like to become a member.
New and renewing members from August:
| Ivor L. | Peter J. | Brian M. |
| Stephen T. | Billy W. |
(if you are not financial, your name could be HERE next month!!!) |
Out total membership is now 52. Membership has been reduced to $10 and $5 for the rest of the year, as there are less functions where you can get value for your money. But on my count, there are still 5 more free barbecues to go!!
A little quieter night than we are used to recently, with 21 members attending a smorgasbord of wonderful food last Saturday. Adult Trivia was the short after dinner entertainment, with Daniel T. and Michael P. winning the prizes in a tie breaker from Peter H. and John P. Quite, but quality time. And welcome back to two long term members who left the Club when they moved to warmer climes for work - Ivor and Peter.
