About Long Yang Club - Melbourne
Long Yang Club Melbourne is a social group for gay Asians, their
partners and friends who can meet to socialize in a friendly and
supportive environment. The objective of the Club is to promote
friendship and respect between gay Asians and non-Asians, through
social, cultural, sporting and educational events. We abide by the
ideals of Long Yang Club International.
The Club will also endeavour to create a safe environment for gay men
who are looking for an alternative social outlet to the “scene” whilst
providing a harassment free atmosphere for Asians against unwanted
advances. We always stress that we are not a dating club and welcome
anyone who is looking for friendship and camaraderie.
LYC Melbourne is an affiliate member of the Long Yang Club International,
the world’s largest network of gay Asian/non-Asian groups. There are
close to 40 chapters established around the world. In Australia, there
are chapters in Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane and of course Melbourne.
In our ANZ/Asia region, chapters are established in Auckland, Manila,
Thailand and Hong Kong. LYC Melbourne was re-established by like-minded
people in October 2004.
Although each chapter is independently managed, all share the same name
and similar goals and objectives. LYC, is an “East-West” club, based on
the philosophy of promoting friendship and understanding between gay
men from, or having origins from, these two parts of the world. The LYC
logo resembles the Chinese “Ying Yang” symbols. The two hands – the
East and West are holding on to each other.
Each year LYC holds an international conference ("iCON"), which
really is more of a 'social party event' than a conference. In 2004
it was hosted by LYC
Thailand. In 2005 the iCON event was held in Toronto,
Canada.
